Introduction
The Standard Challenger is a programmable central site, hardware authentication system for dial modem security. The system operates on the analog side of the operative modems on a LOCK and KEY principle. This makes it completely independent of the hardware and software and puts no additional frustrating burden on the user. It can be used with mainframes or servers and any mix of terminals.

The system is very modular. The Host control unit (HCU) acts as a multi-line Lock and can support up to eight dial lines and up to 4,000 match box sized user Keys with unique ID numbers. Each line requires a Dial Line Module (DLM) that can be easily added or changed at any time. The matchbox sized user Keys require no AC power or battery and are transparent to other usages.

In the event that more phone lines are required, Expansion Chassis that supports eight additional lines can be added. Up to 64 lines can be supported on a single system through additional expansion chassis and DLMs.

The system can be used alone or as a hardware front end to established password systems for secure "two factor authentication" in stationary or mobile applications. It is a great way to quickly implement security without incurring additional user training. Often the savings in training costs are enough to justify the cost of the system.

Operation
In operation, each call is challenged for the presence of the proper Key connected to the caller's modem (RJ-11s). There are over one billion handshake combinations that change with each call offering a high degree of authentication. The system is very quick. Unauthorized calls are aborted within a ½ second while good calls pass transparently with no further delay. The sign-on time is a fraction of that of other systems that require the caller to interact with a hardware token keypad and a host control unit. This quickness also prevents war dialers from identifying the aborted call as a modem.

Programming
Each system has a unique system code making it usable right out of the box. However, the system code can be further modified and each user Key can also be programmed with a separate User ID code. All of this information is programmed into each Key by connecting it to the front panel of the Host Control unit and making the desired selections through the front panel push buttons or through a PC connected to the controller's serial port.

Reports
The serial port is also used to output an event log to a printer or PC as well as to obtain five pre-programmed administrative and audit reports. The reports list:

  1. Active Key numbers
  2. Destroyed Keys
  3. Keys to be destroyed
  4. Utilization by Line #, Time/Date, Key #, Good/Bad/Unanswered Calls
  5. System configuration.
