DESCRIPTION
TWO MODELS are available, the Heart Beat ReBooter-RE and the Heart Beat ReBooter-AC
versions.
They both connect to a dedicated serial port on the PC platform. Software supplied
with the system transmits a heartbeat to the serial port while operating normally.
However, when the system hangs and the heartbeat is missed, a reset will occur.
The "RE" version also connects to the reset jumper pins on its motherboard
through the cable interface assembly that is supplied with the unit. The reset, when
necessary, is performed through the reset pins.
In the event that no reset jumpers are available on the system, the "AC"
version connects directly to an optional Intelligent AC power strip ($79.00) from which
the target device receives its power. Hence, the reboot is preformed by recycling the AC
power.
The "AC" version can also be used with CPS's
AUTOMATIC RING ReBOOTER (ARR) power strip. This configuration provides
two methods of resetting the power strip; by an unanswered phone call (ARR) or from the Heart
Beat ReBooter-AC.
The reset is very quick and completely automatic. No modems, telephone lines, manual
intervention, or even AC power is required. The "RE" relieves the component stress
generated by a full AC power reset.
When the PC platform reboots, the Heart Beat software will reinitialize the unit allowing it to continue monitoring the serial port. A time/date log is also maintained for each reset event. The reset time, as well as other on screen control options, can be set from 30 seconds to 32 minutes. The software is set to produce a heartbeat on the serial port within the set window. The ReBooter derives its operating power from the PCs serial port. It has one DB-25 serial port connector and an RJ-11 that is used to connect the cable to the PC's reset jumper on the motherboard or to the optional AC power strip. Two LEDs monitor the unit's performance. The optional AC Power Strip also has six 110 VAC outlets and a hefty surge protector along with manual override controls. The number of "controlled ports" can also be specified on the power strip while the others may be used as standard AC power strip connections as required. The PC platform can also be used to directly control the power strip by sending it commands, through the serial port, to turn the power ON, OFF, or RECYCLE.
