DESCRIPTION
A matchbox-sized hardware Key, connected to the phone line at the calling end,
performs a high level of authentication before the remote controller will take
any action. The desired action (ON/OFF/RESET) is selected via a rotary switch
on the key. A single Key can be used to control an infinite number of K-RRCs.
The type of control available to the caller is determined by the type of control
device that is connected to the K-RRC. AC power control is provided through an
Intelligent AC Power Strip or an International Power Controller,
whereas simple push button resets can be accomplished through an economical
PC-RJ Cable Assembly that connects to the reset pins on the motherboard
of the target PC.
When using the proper Key, the caller has only to dial the proper phone number
to initiate the desired action. No other Touch-Tone commands or other
involvement is required and the Key is passive to all other inbound or outbound
line activity.
If the Key is not present when the K-RRC receives a call, the call may be
aborted (secure mode) or switched to the default port where normal voice, fax or
modem activity may occur (shared mode). This eliminates the requirement for a
separate phone line for the power control or reset function while maintaining
the security and ease of use features.
The unit can also be set to automatically reset the associated AC power device
or the reset button adapter, if the associated modem or PC does not answer the
line after five rings. It may also simply be used to gain access to remote
modems in a highly authenticated manner, but the Challenger P2, on which the
challenge/response technology is based, may provide a more economical approach
to this basic requirement.
Any of these operating options can be selected via four dip-switches on the K-RRC.
It is about the size of a cigarette package, requires no AC power and has
three RJ-11 telephone type connectors.
Field Programming Option
Option Control Devices
The International Power Controller (IPC) has two standard IEC (PC type)
AC power connectors. It can be installed anywhere in the world using locally available
PC power cords. It also automatically senses the line voltages for any country.
An automatic "heartbeat" reboot function through the serial port of the target
PC is also included.
The PC-RJ Cable Assembly installs in an opening on the back panel of
a PC and connects to the reset pins on the motherboard. It does not require
a slot on the motherboard.
