N-AC2 Application Diagram

What is it?
The N-AC 1-2 is primarily a TCP/IP network controlled AC power switch that can be used with any browser. It also supports a standard Telephone line connection for out of band backup if the network is down as well as independent automatic rebooting features and SQL for machine to machine control. It is available with one controlled AC outlet (N-AC1) or two (N-AC2). Each can be separately controlled.

What does it do?
N-AC 1-2 is primarily designed to control the AC power on distributed network equipment although it also has several other application possibilities. It depends what you wish to control and how you want to control them, via a phone line connection, over the IP network or automatically, SQL or all four.

Each AC port can be separately configured to meet your requirement. The target equipment to be controlled does not have to be on the same network. It could be on an alternate network or completely independent of any network. Much of the N-AC 1-2 is about automatic recycling AC power over the network or using ring or touch tone backup.

Control Options (Local or Remote)
N-AC 1-2 has a USB and RS-232 port for local control and configuration, in addition to the Ethernet port for network control and configuration. The serial ports utilized simple ASCII commands whereas, the Network configuration utilizes easy to use menu screens (IP addresses, password, ring count, operating preferences, delay times, etc.,). Log files can also be displayed through the serial ports. Several automatic power cycle pinging features (Auto Ping and Heartbeat) can also be used to address a verity of user power control and monitoring requirements. A time/date control option will also be available in the near future. Control Screen Sample.

AC Power
The AC Jacks can handle voltages from 110VAC to 250VAC. It has standard IEC320 AC connectors making it easy to install in anywhere in the world with locally available power cords. Note NEMA-5-15 power cord adapters are available for North American Applications ($1.70 each).

Direct Touch-Tone Control
The Ring Reboot feature is standard, but for those that need more control, an additional TelCo option that allows direct ON/OFF/RESET touch-tone control is also available (ITTO $26.00 see below). Additionally, it provides a password and inquiry status from any standard cell, VoIP or land line touch tone phone. However, if this is your sole purpose you may look at other less expensive CPS products that do not have the network interface. Note that the NACs will only look at the phone line for a "ring reboot" when the box is hung. This invites your call or any other call to reset them.

Push Button & Extended Push Button Control (N-AC1 only)
You can also control the AC power to the "Out" AC jack with a RESET button on the N-AC1. It can be used to toggle the ON/OFF states as well to perform a RESET when held. An alternate push button pattern can be selected enabling direct ON/OF/RESET commands. As an example you can use the push button to turn the N-AC1 ON and use the network to turn it OFF or visa-versa. The Extended Push Button Version is supplied with a 6' cable that can be extended up to 3000' from the N-AC1. The corresponding heavy-duty push button switch requires a 0.755" diameter hole for permanent mounting at the user's discretion. You can also use a relay closure from another device to control it.

Applications
Server and Network hardware (Modem/Router) - This is the primary application for the N-AC 1-2. To control the power on a server and the associated network equipment (router, modem, gateway, firewall etc.) in a distributed network. Normally one of the AC Jack ports is connected to the server or other target equipment. However if the network is down, network control is also down. As such, the second AC jack is normally connected to the network hardware and controlled as an out of band backup to reset the network hardware. This can be done automatically (windows based software is supplied) or out of band over a standard telephone line. It can be power cycled by simply ringing the line. Note that the phone line connection is only enabled (if selected) as a result of a failure indicated by one of the automatic features. This allows the phone line to be shared with other analog devices, fax, phone, modem etc. without being constantly reset with each call.

Other Applications
Although this is the primary application for the N-AC 1-2, it can be used for other applications, simply by connecting other devices to the AC power jacks and configuring them to meet your requirement. Here are some ideas.

Two pieces of network equipment. "delayed power up". In some cases two pieces of network equipment such as a modem and a router must be brought back up in a delayed sequence after a reset condition (from IP, ring, USB or power loss). In other words the router or other equipment may want to see the modem before it completes its power up. The answer is to connect the modem and the router to different ports and to program the desired port separation delay into the N-AC2.

Power OFF all equipment. "security". This can be done over the network with an ALL OFF command to both ports. However, you would have to use the phone line or a serial port to restore power since the network hardware may be OFF too. This could be done with a simple ring count, but you might consider the ITTO option for password protection otherwise it would be power ON with any ring.

Two Servers and the network hardware. "combining products". Direct network control of the target equipment on each AC port. Then use another less expensive "Off network" device to provide the network equipment power cycle if needed. See ARR with ITTO ($115.00).

Two Servers and Network Hardware. "sharing the reboot". To Reset one of the ports that may be hung you could use a "Y" power cord. Set up the port with the network hardware to ping an outside address and reset upon a failed ping. Note that he server on the same AC jack would also be reset.

Reason to Buy
N-AC 1-2 can dramatically improve uptime and reduce cost. Studies indicate that over 85% of problems in this type of distributed environment can be resolved by simply recycling power on the offending hardware. The N-AC 1-2 can normally pay for itself by eliminating just one unscheduled service call. Other reasons may be to power off equipment for security purposes or simply to add a little green to the environment.

24x7 Design Philosophy
The N-AC 1-2 is directed toward networks with dispersed installations. Such as kiosks, digital signs, teller machines, cameras, convenience stores, restaurants, test equipment etc. It was modeled on the premise of having someone at a remote site 24x7 to watch the network and/or server operations. In the event of a failure, you can call the "person" over a standard telephone (land line or cell) or reach them over the network (if it is up) and ask them to power ON-OFF or RESET selected equipment (touch-tone operation). You can also train them to RESET a specific piece of equipment based on some condition (automatic operation). All of this for a one time charge of under $200.00... That's it! ... No salary, no medical, no overtime, no holidays, no excuses, no sob stories, etc. What an employee!.. And what's more they will travel in the back of a UPS truck for about ten bucks.
