APPLICATION DIAGRAM RRU Application Diagram

DESCRIPTION

  • Connects to Reset Jumper on Motherboard
or the Power Pins on ATX Motherboards
  • No Stressful AC Reset Surges
  • Three Ways to Reset
  • Security Mode
  • No AC Power Required
  • Programmable
The RRU (Remote Reset Unit) allows a remote PC to be reset via a dial telephone call. The calling device may be a standard telephone or a modem.

The RRU installs in an opening in the PC case, but does not require a card slot on the motherboard.

The RRU connects to the telephone line and to the reset jumpers on motherboard of the target PC. It does not interfere with operation of the Reset Button. Note: This is not an AC power type of reset. If AC power rebooting is required, see CPS's K-RRC.

The telephone line at the target end can be dedicated to this task or the RRU can share the line with other devices such as a fax, modem or PBX. A Security Key at the calling end is required for sharing.

The operating mode is selected through the dip switches. They provide three methods of initiating the reset and a Security Mode. Note: This unit does not recognize touch-tone commands. If touch tone control is required, see CPS's 2C or SP-RRC.

SELECTIONS:

  1. AUTO RESET - This performs an automatic reset if nothing answers after 8 rings. Security Key is not required.

  2. KEY RESET - This enables a reset when the caller has the Security Key connected (shared line mode).

  3. KEY BACKUP - This answers the call after five rings and resets only if a Security Key is present.

  4. SECURITY MODE - Only calls with a Security Key are permitted. All other calls are defeated.

SECURITY KEY
The matchbox sized security Key connects to the caller's telephone device with RJ-11s. It is required when sharing the target telephone line is necessary or when using the "Security Mode". No AC power is required.

It operates on a "LOCK and KEY" concept. The RRU serves as a "Lock" and challenges any inbound call for the presence of the proper "Key" connected to the calling device, using an encrypted handshake that changes with each call. If the proper Key is present, the call progresses transparently. If it is not there, the call is aborted within one second. The Key may be left permanently connected, because it is transparent to all other inbound or outbound activity. Normally, one or just a few keys are used to support a large number of RRUs. Conversely, multiple Keys may be used for a small number of RRUs.

PROGRAMMER
An optional programmer is also available. It is used to change the security codes in the Locks and Keys and to program new units. This can be accomplished locally or remotely by calling the unit.
