An insurance company had a pool of modems that were intended for dial out only. To insure this, they set their modems for "no answer", but it wasn't long before the employees learned how to reconfigure them with a simple AT command and use the lines to get in from home. A call to their homes left the number on their Caller ID. This left a bank of hit and miss unsecured modems on a very proprietary network. To solve this problem, the company installed Challenger P2 Locks on each line. The P2s are a hardware Lock and Key combination designed to authenticate the caller. Only calls with the proper Key can get through. Since no Keys were ever issued, no inbound calls ever got through which was the original objective. |
