CPS PRODUCTS IN A VoIP ENVIRONMENT

CPS manufacturers several products that can be used in a VoIP environment. They are generally divided into two distinct categories: REBOOTING and TELEPHONE LINE SHARING. The following are some of the problems encountered and the corresponding solutions provided utilizing CPS products.

REBOOTING AND AC POWER CONTROL CATEGORY

Problem: My DSL Modem keeps hanging and I am missing calls.
Solution: Use a CPS Intelligent AC Power Node (IPN). It Automatically REBOOTS the DSL Modem and Routers.

Connect the modem/router to the AC power on the IPN and run the "Auto Ping" software on your PC (serial port required (RS-232 or USB)). Set the Auto Ping to ping an IP address outside of your local network through the router or modem. If the return ping fails, the assumption is that modem or router is hung. The PC will send a reset command through the serial port to the IPN. It will recycle the AC power.

This is normally used at remote locations where direct access to the AC power recycle is not available, but it can also be used locally in the home or office to help assure that calls are not missed because the modem/router is unexpectedly hung.

Problem: My VoIP machine seems to keep Locking Up.
Solution: Use a CPS International AC Power Controller (IPC) and Heartbeat software to Automatically Reboot the PC.

Connect the PC to the AC power on the IPC and run the Heartbeat Software on the PC that you are concerned about. The PC sends a "heartbeat" message to the IPC through the serial port (RS-232 or USB). If the IPC does not see the message in xx time (you define), it will recycle the AC power on the PC and whatever else may be connected to it. The assumption is that the server is hung.

Problem: I want out of band Backup to the Automatic rebooting solution.
Solution: Use the six Ring Reboot feature on the IPC also.

You can also connect a standard phone line to the IPC unit and call it. If nothing answers in six rings, it will reboot. Use a separate phone line or the analog part of a DSL line.

Problem: I can't use the six-ring feature. I have other telephone devices on the line that will answer the rings.
Solution: Add an Touch-Tone Controller (SP-RRC) to the IPC.

The Touch-Tone Controller ("C") will allow you to share the line with other standard telephone type devices (fax, voice, modem etc.). It also provides direct ON/OFF/RESET control and password protection. It answers the line and waits for the appropriate touch-tone power commands.

Note that for North America or other 110-125v. applications, the Controlled Power Strip (CPS) may be substituted for the IPN and the Intelligent Power strip (ARR) may be substituted for the IPC.

SHARING CATEGORY

The following are suggested applications for CPS Telephone Line Sharing (TSS) products in a VoIP environment. These products have been sold for years on standard PSTN telephone networks. However, now that VoIP is being used with some of the legacy TelCo equipment, the line sharing products have taken on new life.

All of the configurations below are in use or have been tested using an ActionTech VoSky gateway with the free Skype VoIP software. The configurations are believed to operate with other gateway boxes as well. However, there is a small possibility that other manufactures may handle the FSOX port (phone company simulation port) on their products a little differently. We hope to test additional gateway boxes as the opportunities arise. If you have tried another combinations let us know. We will add it to the list.

OUTBOUND CALL SHARING

Problem: I want to use several standard telephones to access to my VoIP system.
Solution: Use one of the TSS (Telephone Line Sharing) products.

They allow multiple standard analog handsets to be connected to one VoIP internet connection. They are available with 1 - 2 or 4 telephone line connections and up to eight standard hand sets, or other standard analog devices. As each phone goes off hook it will bid for an unused VoIP line connection. If they are all in use, no connection will be provided. Inbound calls are directed to the first 4 ports corresponding to the telephone line connections.
Note that only one Gateway box is also required for each VoIP connection (not each phone).

Problem: I let my employees use the VoIP line on their breaks and after hours, but when I want to make a business call, I want to disconnect them and get the line.
Solution: Use the TSS-2PI.

It will disconnect any call in progress when your connection on the "priority port" goes off hook. You could also use this on a telephone line that supports an alarm system or other low usage primary applications.

REMOTE INBOUND TELEPHONE LINE SHARING

Problem: I want to call my office from where ever I may be and be able to select the regular voice, fax or the VoIP line. Plus I would like some password protection for the VoIP line.
Solution: Use one of the FTS (Flexie Telco Switches).

It allows the inbound caller to touch-tone select any analog telephone device or the VoIP Internet connection attached to the FTS. It is also Password protected. An eight port model is also available.

Problem: We are a school system and would like to switch our voice lines to the VoIP network after hours and on weekends to allow our students to make VoIP calls when the lines are not being used for school activity.
Solution: Try a Flip Switch.

It will programmatically switch up to four lines on a scheduled basis. The Password requirement in the Gateway units will help restrict access if necessary.

LIMITING THE CALL TIME

Problem: We let our customers (visitors) use the VoIP system for international calls, but they tend to stay on too long.
Solution: Use the MAX CALL TIMER.

Connect it anywhere that a "X" appears in the previous diagrams. It will disconnect the call in progress once the time selected in the dip switches is met.
