DESCRIPTION
MINI MARS, is a downsized, self powered, and low cost Unisys Poll/Select
addressable printer interface. The unit represents a breakthrough in
technology and price/performance.
MINI MARS allows standard printers with a Centronics interface to be connected
to Unisys (Burroughs) Poll/Select data lines. It can be connected to the host
computer over asynchronous point-to-point or multi-point modems; or directly to
the computer via in-house TDI (Two-Wire-Direct-Interface), or RS-232
connections.
The unit derives it's operating power from the 5V supply of the printer
interface. In the event that the user wishes to have the unit continue to
respond to Polls or Selects while the printer is powered off, an optional
external power supply is also available.
The unit is normally operated externally to the printer, but because of its
small size and lack of external power requirement, it may also be easily
installed within the printer enclosure. The liberal power requirement also
makes it transparent to the various international power requirements.
MINI MARS has a circular 8k buffer that acts as a mini-spooler for optimum data
presentation to the printer. It will store up to four 2K blocks of data or a
greater number of smaller blocks.
It supports all of the Standard variations of the Unisys protocol as well as
transmission numbers, space compression, control character filter, etc... at
data rates up to 38.4 Kbps. The parameter selections have been simplified.
They, along with the address, are selected via dip switches and three push
buttons that are housed in a protected slide covered compartment. An English
language parameter dump feature also serves as a self test and three LEDs help
to monitor the units performance. A six foot printer cable is supplied with
the unit and a male DB-25 pin connector is presented for the connection to the
host. Although not intended for direct outdoor connections, the TDI circuit is
also surge protected for added durability.
In spite of its small size, MINI MARS is a powerful state of the art unit that
can support high speed line printers, but because of it's low price it may also
be considered for lower speed printer applications that are traditionally
supported through the pass-through printer ports of Unisys type terminals.
Now that many terminals are being replaced with PCs and terminal emulation
packages, Data Comm managers cannot always count on the availability of the
pass-through printer port as in the past. The PC users are more independent
and may choose to power off their units to conserve the hard drive or protect
the data. They may also choose to stop the emulator to run other memory
sensitive programs. In any event, the background printer ports on PCs are less
likely to be available when required. MINI MARS represents an economical
dedicated solution.
