DESCRIPTION
Within the realm of practicality, the copper wire version is designed to be as
foolproof as possible to protect terminals and the host computer equipment
against data line induced electrical surges, while maintaining its primary
function of TDI signal regeneration. However, if the surge should get past the
surge protection feature of the unit and damage the TDI circuit, the OPTI-CON
includes a "Second Chance" module that can be changed by the operator to quickly
put the unit back into service. In any event, the optical isolation between the
two ports will prevent the surge from passing through the unit and damaging
the host computer or terminal equipment. Additional "Second Chance" modules may
be purchased without returning the unit for repair.
As a further precaution, on the AC power side of the design, the OPTI-CON
incorporates a split bobbin transformer to minimize the possibility of data line
induced surges from traversing to the AC power line, where they could cause
damage to other devices connected to same branch circuit. The Fiber
Optic version is, by nature, immune to any of these electrical disturbances.
The OPTI-CON incorporates an exclusive CPS TDI driver circuit that supports
speeds up to 115KB as well as extended cable distances with minimal line
loading.
The Copper Wire Version may be used as a single stand alone TDI signal repeater,
or it may be used in pairs similar to short range modems at distances of up to 2
miles. XDI and impedance matching jumper selections may be used to further
extend the cable distance and/or improve the signal quality.
XDI provides a type of short-range modem capability that is also compatible with
other CPS products that provide an XDI interface. It provides a practical
approach to addressing exceptionally long TDI cable runs, the use of twisted
pair cable, or high speed 38.4kb data line operation that normally restricts
cabling distances.
All of these features working in tandem serve to make the OPTI-CON the "CURE
ALL" product for TDI networks.
