INTRO
The C-RC (Cell Remote Controller) provides users another option to remotely control CPS "Base Units". It is similar to any other GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) cell phone except without the voice or battery. It can receive a wireless cell call (text message or modem) to control the "Base Unit" as well as other equipment. Depending on the "Base Unit" selected, it allows the user to control AC power, open/close relays (up to 720) or do port switching (analog or digital) at a remote location over a cell network from almost anywhere in the world. Multiple "Addressable Base Units" may be connected to one C-RC.

The C-RC expands these remote control capabilities to places where a standard land telephone line or TCP/IP network connection may not be available or practical (see other CPS Controllers). The C-RC also has application for back-up access, semi-permanent or mobile applications. In most cases the user may borrow a SIM card (Subscriber Identity Module) from a functioning cell phone on the appropriate network to temporarily use the C-RC.

PORTS
The C-RC has two RJ-11 ports. One connects the "Base Unit" and the other can connect a second "Remote Controller" of a different type, if required. It also has a 9-pin RS-232 port allowing it to also be used as a standard wireless modem (standard AT command subset). The modem speed is dependent on the quality of the cell signal, but generally 14.4KB might be a reasonable expectation.

The serial port is normally used for other applications, but it may also be used to locally configure the C-RC.

Dip switches and LEDs are used to monitor the operation as well as the signal quality. Various antennas are available to accommodate different environments.

OPERATION
The user can send a text message from another cell phone (message templates are suggested) or the service providers web site. The acknowledgment is returned as a text message. The C-RC "Base Unit" commands and the C-RC administrative controls are both password protected.

A land-line modem may also be used for remote control instead of text messaging. This may be viewed as a "dial-up Hyperterm/text session".

The Caller ID feature of the cell phones can also be employed on normal calls for additional security or for expanded application requirements. Up to 60 "authorized CID numbers" can be stored in the C-RC. These are stored in EEPROM and not dependent on the SIM card memory.

AUTOMATIC CID "DO" TABLE
In addition to using the CID list for call authorization, each CID can include a "control command". It permits the automatic execution of the control command upon the recognition of the appropriate CID from a normal phone call (not a text message). This means that various authorized callers can execute a relay or other "Base Unit" command, simply based on their CID. Different groups of CIDs could perform different "Base Unit" Functions. Since there is no acknowledgment, this may be useful with visually verified applications such as opening a gate, lobby door, garage door, bells, whistles, etc.

The good news is that no minutes are charged since the C-RC only recognizes the CID and never really answers the call. This allows subscription to a basic low cost service with no free minutes. However, modifying the CID list or table requires chargeable minutes if done remotely.

USER RESPONSIBILITY
The user is responsible for contracting with the cell provider to obtain the service. A GSM service with text messaging is required (about $20.00/mo.). The service provider will also supply the SIM card. The CRC will only accommodate a 3V SIM.

Additional features are planed for this product as it evolves. Please let us know if you have a specific area of interest.

Orders are being accepted for Jan/05 delivery.
